New Zombie book!

Hey all,

My good friend David Monette has written his own book about zombies and is attempting to self publish it through Kickstarter.  Check it out HERE.

I have included a lot of pictures done by Dave. He is a professional illustrator and his work has appeared in Magic The Gathering, on magazine covers and all over the place. I won't tell you much about the book other than the fact that I have read a LOT of zombie books and this is among the best.

So if you feel like getting behind one of our own who has written something outstanding and is trying to get it launched, check out HIS KICKSTARTER and back him.  I love kickstarter now by the way! :)

Here is the first draft of the video I made for him. I misspelled conscious.:)

This is one of the big battle scenes. Wouldn't you love to know what lead up to this?

Most of these images are original artwork for the book.  Take a look at his Kickstarter and show him some support!  He is one of the best people I know.

What a great weekend!

For the first time, I went to a con with no aspirations to really play any games at all. I did play in the trios tournament with my new Tau army, but that is more of a late night addon than any serious game.  Instead I set up a vendor table, put my armies on display there, and chatted with more people than I could count as they made their way through the isles!

Oh and there was even some one dressed up in a costume!

Sadly this was not her.

Oh well, bring on Templecon!

I went to Nova as a sponsor intending on promoting and selling my new DVD set which did very well. I donated a bunch of DVDs to be given away as prizes, I painted models for the Charity Army Give Away which in total raised over 10 grand, and I did seminars.  Most of my weekend though was spent at my table, talking about my armies with curious visitors, and sharing my love for creating and playing the game with many, many people.

Curiously, one of the largest demographics of people I spoke to were families. Parents with middle school age children.  There must have been something going on in the hotel, or they just wanted to pop in and see what was up. But however they rrived, they came.  I spent hours talking with parents about how to get into the game with their kids, drawing upon my own experience teaching an after school warhammer game at my own school.  There were so many curious parents who wanted to give into their kids desires, but also not break the bank! It is always entertaining to see a parents face when I show them a painted model, and how it looks when you open a box and see them all on sprue. That is probably the biggest hinderance and annoyance to parents when they get their kid their first 40k set for Christmas then realize what they are getting into after they open the box. So I got to show them what to do and what to expect and the proper way to start.  All of them appreciated the advice.

It was fun to talk about the game with new people, and let the kids touch and examine the models.  Had I known there would be so many kids and parents, I would have brought more variety!

Part of it, I suppose, was the fact that aside from the charity army, and the painting contest that was going on, I was the only one with painted models on display and definitely the only source of models you could get close to and touch.  I sorta had the market on eye candy I guess.  Such that it was, my Tau are far from complete.

I arrived at around 8pm on Thursday.  My first Trios game was organizing as I was bringing in my stuff.  I drove down after work, and would have made it in great time but I got lost in DC. GPS does not like all of the closely spaced off ramps!

I rushed to the tables, and pulled my Tau and threw some dice, and started slamming beers.  Not long after I found myself in the VIP lounge with Mike Brandt and company, sipping scotch and feeling good. Then we went down to see some of the Narrative games going on, and I watched my friend John Stiening play for a bit, and that was it. It was about 3am, and I was wobbly and staggered up to my room knowing that 7am came all too early.

My first seminar was set for 7:30 am. I was doing a class teaching how to make my display boards.  A dozen or so equally hung over folks showed up and off we went. It was a flurry of cutting, shaving, and flocking. We sprayed so much paint that the hotel security came in and yelled at us. But in the end, every one there created an awesome display and was leaving proudly with what was essentially a new army since a good display should drastically improve the aesthetic without competitng with the models.  Some of these guys had never seen their armies on a proper display!  A few hours later, I was left standing in a room of foam shavings and spray paint haze while the guys ran off to play their games.  The seminar was a fantastic success!

So then I spent the majority of the day sucking down water at my vendor table and talking to great folks like Sean Parker. We talked about or love for Robotech from the 80s and how we got sucked into the Kickstarter for the new model game.  We also discussed other stuff like Transformers and you name it.  Oh and we talked 40k.  He bought my set of DVDs and sent me this generous and flattering testimonial after previewing them:

Hello!
This is Sean Parker, we met at the NOVA Open this past weekend. I purchased your 6 DVDs, and we spent a lot of time chatting at your Booth on Sunday.  I just wanted to say it was very nice meeting you, and thanks again for your Videos. I’ve learned more from these videos than I did from any of the seminars I attended during my time at the Con. These were exactly what I was looking for and its gone a long way to improving my painting! Thanks!
I especially like your video on painting Dark Angels. It was exactly how I was going to do them, and it just reaffirmed that my method was going to work before I really invested the time into doing the entire army thusly. It’s gotten me excited to start work on them again, and I can’t wait to get to the project. I need to finish what I have on my Table already first however. And since I am painting a Crimson Slaughter Chaos Marine army, I’ll be watching your videos on Red next.
Sorry if I sound like a fanboy, but I’m just feeling excited about the painting aspect of the hobby again. Something I’ve not felt in a long time. I’ll be nice to have painted armies again, something I’ve not had since before 2e 40k.
 Again thanks!

Those are as kind words as I have ever heard man, and it was an honor to have met and inspired you to get back in the saddle.  If you would like to see what inspired him, LOOK HERE.  Thanks to YOU Sean for inspiring me.  You are why I write this blog and make my videos.
Friday blew bye in a rush.  I spent so much time chatting with folks that time got away from me.  Before I knew it, it was time for my second trios game, which I played with Simon Lean as a partner and we won.  Friday night I went to bed early.  I knew I would have a long Saturday and then would have to drive home on Sunday.
Saturday started with more of the same. This was when most of the parents came in. At 2 I did a seminar on Hand Painting with about 10 people. It was much more laid back than the display board one as we could relax and take our time. I demonstrated, badly, how to do angel wings and scrolls. It had been a while since I had done any and I should have practiced a bit to dust off the rust! Then the guys and gals tried themselves.  I wished immediately that I had asked to have them all reminded to bring models as we painted on some primed cardboard which was not a great surface, but still they were pleased with the results.
I did some paint judging for the 40k events. Sadly I was unable to commit to being a full judge because of my vendor table, but I did get to consult with Mike on some tough decisions.  I felt honored that he trusted me to ask my advice.
I got in a demo with some Flames of War, and proceeded to purchase a starter kit.  Yet another game to play...
At night I got stomped by a sisters army in my third trios game, and had a great time chilling with Justin from Secret Weapon Miniatures, who by the way puts on a very good seminar himself. He did a masterclass painting seminar, talking about color theory and model focus.  I walked out of there with not just more knowledge, but a nice example for my own teaching style.
So that about ran the weekend.  Having a few beverages while talking to good peeps is what I like to do, and I did it a lot.  The best part of these things is getting to catch up with friends. I had a good chat with Neil Gilstrap from 11th company, always a pleasure, and I saw guys I don't normally see like Nick Rose and even some of you blog readers.  It was a glut of hand shaking and laughs.
The only problem was that I didn't get a chance to mingle much.  There were so many guys up in the gaming room that I wanted to get to talk to, but I didn't want to spend too much time away from my table.  Next year I will be bringing Jim the Stout Smurf and with him manning the table, should be able to slip away more.
Oh and I will be playing in the Narrative event I decided.  It looked like a lot of fun!  I was also pretty jealous of the GT guys. At the end I was a little sad knowing that I was not in consideration for Best Painted. John Stiening actually won with his "Contemptor" dread Ultramarines for the Narrative best painted.  It was beautiful, but next year I will give him some competition I hope. I will probably finally debut my Lamenters by then, using the new Space Marine codex of course. ;)
That is about it, I walked out of there having spent half the cash I made on models and using the rest to pay my Hotel bill.  I got some Flames of War, Warmachine, X-Wing and some AWESOME "stormtrooper" models I can use as guard allies.  from Dreamforge Games.  I am planning on doing Lamenters with some guard for Mechanicon and beyond.  Time will tell!
Sorry, I have no pics for you.  I packed my camera, but didn't notice the wife had pulled out the battery and put it in the charger.  That sucks. But I am sure the Nova guys will post some soon and I will respost them here to share.

Look what I just found in the mail box...

His name is Strawberry. He just consumed a small child.

Now, I know all of you have probably seen much bigger in the dunes near Baghdad, or under a rock in Arizona, and maybe I am being a huge pussy, but this is Connecticut.  The most ferocious monster around here should be that soccer mom driving an Escalade in front of me and the largest man eaters should be Deer Ticks in the back yard.

But no, I just encountered Strawberry, in my mailbox.

He met his fate via mail box door.

Observe his abdomen. It is the size of George Washington's head.  (After crushing)

He has as much hair as I do on my back.

He had so much mass that when the door slammed shut, wedging him into the rim, it was difficult to open again.

I don't think spiders have muscles, but if he did, I think he could press more than me.

I don't know what kind of spider this is and you are welcome to speculate, please let me know, but his total body was close to the size of this quarter, and with his legspan, could easily attach himself to my face like the impregnator from Alien and suck the life out of my head.

I think I heard him scream NOOOOOO as the door slammed shut.  In a little, but deep spider voice.

I am off to Home Depot to pick up a HUGE bottle of bug killer.

Fall TV is here again!  The Walking Dead starts in a month and it is time to start flexing the fingers.

Bur for now, lets finish off the summer shall we?

I don't watch much summer TV, I oddly don't watch much TV at all.  But that doesn't mean I don't like to talk about it!  The issue is that no one I see on a daily basis watches the shows I watch so I have no one to talk to about them. Will you be my friends?

Lets start with Breaking Bad.  I don't have much to say about it.  I have been watching it since it launched, I forget how I stumbled across it, but I happened to catch the pilot.  The show is coming to a screeching end and this week, is the first time I have really had a problem with any thing.

Here goes:

The White Neo Nazis had the DEA agents in their sights.  There were 6 or 7 of them.  There were two agents.  Walter was in the SUV and Jesse was in the car.  All of the nazis were pointing, nay, AIMING their guns, a combination of assault rifles, hunting rifles, pistols and one badass automatic shot gun at the DEA agents.

SO there is a lot of "Drop IT" and "Show me your badges" going back and forth, until finally the leader of the nazis just gives the signal to open fire.  Each of the nazis gets off at least 4 or 5 shots before the agents even move.

How the hell did neither of them get hit?

Breaking Bad is full of outrageous situations and narrow, implausible escapes. But for the most part they were absurd situations. There was nothing to pick at because what was going on was so out of the ordinary that there was never any sort of logical solution.  That is what makes the show great.

But this case?  Those guys were not a bunch of first time shooters. They were hardened killers, that efficiently wiped out an entire drug ring just a couple episodes prior.  Now when they have two lightly armed DEA agents dead to rights, they roll 1s and pull the big whiff?  It just bugs me.  Thoughts?

A striking image that makes Breaking Bad great.
On with the real reason I am typing today.

Under the Dome.

Here is another absurd situation. A mysterious dome/sphere appears around an entire town and the surrounding country side, woods and lake.  Hi jinks ensue.

How can I really nit pick about any thing that goes on under the dome?

Well that is why I am here!

First, it was originally envisioned as a 13 episode show. However, it feels like they shot the first couple not expecting it to last on TV more than a month, then realized they had a small hit on their hands and threw the rest of the episodes together.

For example, when Jr. had the girl tied up in the bomb shelter.  He was saying "The dome is making you sick" in regards to his perception that the dome has caused her to stop loving him. But really, she just stopped loving, or never did love the creep.  Chicks do that.  Any way, after more or less writing him off as a minor character, they bring him back in as a major player by making him the fourth member of the fellowship of the dome.  They they have to explain away his weirdness and he explains what he REALLY meant when he told her the dome was making her sick.  Get it?  I know the show was written for 13 episodes but this just seems like klunky writing. Like in lost when three years later they finally tried to explain why there was a polar bear in the pilot episode, and the smoke monster. They were strange and cool in the pilot, but really had no meaning or purpose.  Later in the series, (after it became a huge hit) they "wrote in" reasons why they were there.

Now for the last 10 weeks or so, the show has had ups and downs. Strangely, "Ye old cement factory" is the place to be. It has doubled as a MOAB shelter and as a fight club.  I guess I have to scope out local cement factories to add to my zombie survival plan!

But there are other silly things. Like the relative size of the dome.  At first it did not seem all that huge. But last night, Big Jim took a boat out to a house on an island in the water that was trapped Under the Dome.  It looked pretty damn far! Speaking of the lake, I don't remember what the plot twist was that stopped them from drinking the lake water... but why not drink the lake water?  There was almost two episodes dealing with the need for water and the destruction of the water tower.  People died for a well.  WHY?  That massive amount of water that Jim was boating across to get to a secluded island with a house on it was surely enough water for them to drink!  It was definitely not time to start killing farmers for their well... Make sense!

Then there is the issue of what happened on that island.  Small point, but why on earth would the lady there be using an M1 Carbine?  Wouldn't there be something else available other than an 80 year old rifle that I can't even imagine there is still ammo for?  (don't bother googling the gauge of the gun or its ammo availability, it is not really the point and doesn't really matter.)  The point is that if they were going to go old, why not go really old and give her a Colt Peacemaker.  Even if the old guy was a WWII veteran and he maintained his old Carbine over the years. I can't imagine many WWII vets bouncing around their various properties as her story says.  I suppose the gun was also used in Korea and even Nam, so that may explain it a bit, but still. It bugs me that they would have given her such a dated fire arm.  Why not just a simple hunting rifle or shotgun?

Then in exact opposition to that, when Big Jim and Barbie are going out to relieve a stubbon citizen of his weapons, Barbie picks a sweet AR-15 (or clone) off the pile.  It had a scope and laser dot sight.  That thing was easily a 2-3 thousand dollar gun. I could be wrong, but from what I know of guys who own AR-15s, they are pretty much intended for home defense and survival situations. You know, like if you were living some place where there was limited resources being burned by the minute and a population of people getting edgier and edgier, scavenging for food and killing each other with no end to the crisis in sight...  I find it hard to swallow that any one with a weapon like that, UNDER THE DOME, would voluntarily give it up just to make the streets safer.

That doesn't make sense!  How is my voluntarily giving up my AR-15, when others are NOT giving up their guns, making me safer?  None the less, some one coughed it up and it was in a pile of guns.  Maybe the guy needed some toilet paper and traded it.  Whatever.  In the end it was just an easy plant so that they could have the following scene where Barbie bounced the glowing red ball back and forth between Big Jim's and the other guys head.  They wanted the image on TV to add drama to the scene.  Nothing more. I hate that.

Last point before I get to work today.

The stand off between Barbie, Lady Cop and Big Jim.  If you looked in the background, the car she seemingly came out of was there BEFORE Jim shot those two people. And mere seconds after he shot, she was there telling Barbie to freeze.  How could she possibly have missed Jim shooting them?  And what the hell was Barbie thinking?  First, he had no idea that Jim had manipulated her.  He wasn't there.  As far as he knew, the girl was still trusting of him, as was established by their relationship in the first 10 episodes.  Why would he think that she would not listen to her and backhand her instead of getting her to listen to reason?  But then there are the circumstances of the whole thing.  You don't need to be Gil Grissom to piece together the scene.  Jim's gun fired the shots and it was a different model and I think caliber from Barbies.  The shots were fired from the direction of Jim.  Jim's gun is missing two bullets.  Etc etc.  All Barbie had to say was:

Hey lady friend cop who I have saved, and has witnessed me saving at least a dozen people. I know I have my gun pointed at the shady town assemblyman, but hear me out.  He shot them. His gun is on the ground. It matches the bullets in their heads. Mine has a full magazine. His is missing two rounds. His hand has gun shot residue that you can test with the kit in your trunk.  I have not fired a gun in days.  They were killed from his angle while I was walking away.  He then threatened and attempted to kill me so I disarmed him. I am making a citizens arrest...

You get the point.

Instead he inexplicably backhands her and runs off. Only the guilty run.

Doh, there goes the bell

More later.

Tournament Watch: Battle For Salvation

Fall is here... Sorta... (it was 97 degrees in CT two days ago)

But that means Battle for Salvation is around the corner!

BATTLE FOR SALVATION is one of the biggest and most successful GTs on the east coast.  It is run by a club who's namesake is used for the title. It originated from the club's original gaming location, in the rec room of a Salvation Army.  The club has moved on to bigger and more convenient halls, but the name persists!

When is BFS?  Columbus Day Weekend!  October 11-13.

Why is BFS so successful!  Well to begin, it is a GT created for the players.  As far as I know, all of the fees come right back to the players in the form of prize support.  (With the exception of fees used to cover the costs of the venue of course.) This is supplemented by huge donations from local businesses.  It is a prize fest!

Last years "Best Painted" won a GW paint mega set!  If I am not mistaken, that is about a 400 dollar retail item...  Yah, I would say prize fest. Wish I was there!  My little sister got married that weekend last year, stopping me from being able to go and compete with my friend Joe Johnson for the painting honors.

But loot is not the only reason why BFS is a great GT.  The TO, Bob Sinnot is a man wise beyond his years and is genuinely one of the best people I know, right up there with Ted Nagel.  The BFS crew, including some industry heavy hitters like Danny Internets are on hand to smash face, and of course there is Fritz who is there to test his latest sneaky tactics and run an event or two. Last year he ran a Kill Team tournament.

BFS also attracts some of the best players in the game.  I would dare say the East Coast has some of the fiercest competitors in the world including Alex Fennel, Ben Holy Moly, Young Tony and his Brother, (as if I need to mention his last name. He is like Pele)  Nick Nanavati, Neil Gilstrap, Mike Brandt and gobs and gobs of other dudes.  Sorry if I didn't mention you!  So if you fancy yourself a power player, here is your chance to test yourself against the best.

The Venue?  It is held at The Palisades Mall, in Rockland County NY. One of the biggest malls in the state if not the country.  The venue is massive and never feels crowded, but that is not the best part. It has huge bathrooms that are serviced by the mall all day long.  For those of us who have waited in line to drop a deuce in a less than great rest room at a GT, you know how important that is.  But also, there is a top of the line food court for those of you who need a quick bite, and all sorts of sit down joints like TGIF if you have the time.  All inside the mall and a short walk from the gaming room!  The hotels are less than five miles away too, which means they are a short jump from the mall. Or if you are lucky you can grab a room at the shady motel right across the street...

Any, BFS is one of my favorite events tied for second with Nova behind my all time favorite Mechanicon. That is saying a LOT!  They use Nova rules but a 2k point limit.

Bill McFadden and his beloved.

Sadly and Happily for me, I am in a pickle. My good 40k friend Bill McFadden and his Fiance have decided to get married that weekend and did me the honor of inviting me to their happy day.  Sorry 40k, but real life comes first, and there is no way I would skip Bill's day to play games.  So while I wish I could make it, yet another wedding is going to keep me away from BFS this year.  He is worth it though. Look at the picture! He is a true gamer.  I believe that is a framed picture of a Transformer, also an xbox controller, battle foam, 40k box sets and some sort of board game.  If this picture was to pan out we can only wonder at what other nerdliness we would find in his apartment. Looking forward to your big day man and I will get the RSVP out today.

There you have it!  Another year, another October and another Battle for Salvation. Check out THEIR WEBSITE for information on buying a ticket and making accommodations and I wish you all the best of luck!

My next action will be at Mechanicon.  I am still considering DaBoyz again this year as I had a great time last year, but at 8 hours plus, it is quite the trip and the funds are very low.  We shall see.

Keep on gaming.

The stall of The Lamenters (and a rebirth)

Remember my Lamenters?

Yah this thing!  The project I started last summer, right about the same time 6th Ed dropped.

Well they have sadly been sitting on a shelf because 6th Edition pretty much left my beloved Blood Angels at or near the bottom of the competitive 40k rankings.

I lost the desire to work on the army because I didn't want to spend the months to paint it only to get my nipples kicked in every time I played.  I think the kicker was when I played my Blood Angels around this time at a tournament in Rhode Island and got "Smoking Boots".  (dead last)

Well, a couple things have happened recently to renew my desire to paint the yellow.

First, I went to The Nova.  I hung around with John Stiening a lot who was playing in the Narrative. It looked fun! So I decided to play in that next year too.  But also in talking with John it was refreshing to see his almost indifferent approach to getting blasted off the table.  He had fun!  He actually enjoyed making a game out of NOT losing every single one of his marines.

Granted, The Narrative is NOT the 40k GT.  It is not meant to be uber competitive.  But this was a good experience for me to see.  I don't know if I will ever be able to embrace getting tabled though...  I am just too damn competitive.

Luckily for me, something else happened. The new Space Marine codex came out!

I have decided to renew the project using the new SM codex, Black Templars in particular.

First, the army was designed to showcase an array of models. I wanted armor, a Storm Raven, a dread, assault marines, bikers, scouts and white painted Death company. That all holds true.  But the Black Templars gives me a great solution to the problem I had before in that Blood Angels sucked.

First, why did they suck?  The BA codex has almost zero long range shooting while focusing on assault as their strength. But assault is dead!  And of course there are always exceptions and builds that are still good in assault, but it AINT the Blood Angels.

Why is the new codex now good?  Well it fills some of the holes I had. Now I can play Thunder Fire cannons, and Centurian Devastator squads and all I really lose is a 5+ feel no pain bubble!  But also I can put a captain on a bike and turn bikes into troops.  Hell, I can put a captain on the table that is not a glorified sergeant!  Etc etc.  It may not be the best choice, but it is far better than what I had.

Here is loosely what I am thinking about building.

New Sm Codex 2k list.

Captain on a Bike
Emps Champion

Command Squad
all on bikes
apothecary with fist
champ
a grav gun or two

A crusade squad with 10 initiates and 5 neophytes
You see, I get to play my combat scouts!

A bike squad

A vanguard vet squad with jump packs

Another Vanguard vet squad with JP, only painted white posing as Death Co.

Storm Raven

Thunderfire Cannon x2

IG Allies:
Command squad
x2 vet squads
Vendetta
x2 Thudd Guns

Why the guard allies?  Because I found those awesome Eizenkern storm trooper models and I want to use them!  Plus I want the Vendetta and I maybe will even go for a Storm Talon.

So there you go!

No, this is not an uber competitive list and no I won't win any GT with it. BUT at least it is a legal list playable with what I wanted. Minus the dread of course. I cant bring myself to field any dread that is not a furioso.

Now I only hope Army Builder updates soon so I can finalize the points!  Hate writing stuff down.

What options?  Well Blood Angels allies of course.  I can play Mephiston, an assault squad and a furioso.  Can I put the Blood Angels dread in the Space Marine storm raven?  That would seal the deal!

X-Wing gaming table!

Here is a work in progress shot of a side project I have going on. This is my X-Wing gaming table!  Fritz got me into the game and of course I can't just do something like this part way.

I'm  all in baby!

This table is 36x48 inches. From what I could tell, the standard tournament size for an X wing game is 36x36 however some guys play on a bigger 48" table.  So I created this 48" long but left a foot unpainted, creating a divider at 36".

I was playing around with finish, and put an X wing logo in the right and used some Mod Podge gloss over the top to seal it in.  That is why it is so shiney there.  I'm going to finish the entire board with the mod podge, then give it a Matte finish.

The painting itself is not really what I was hoping for.  I think I should have done the galaxy much thicker at the center. I do sorta like the little nebula effects, especially the one on the bottom right.  I need to add more color as well...

The board was made on 1/2" thick particle board, and framed with 1.5" x 3/4" wooden molding.

I will hopefully get a chance to break in this table on Monday against Fritz for my first full game of X wing!

What do I have?

I went imperial. I have a swarm of Ties, Tie Interceptors, Bombers, a Lamda Shuttle, Fett, and Vaders fighter.  I always like the images from the movies of the massive swarms of Tie Fighters flying at the Rebel ships.  Speaking of which, I hope in the future they put out some more movies that cover the dog fights better, maybe even from the imperial point of view!

Are you guys into X wing?  What are you playing? What is a winning tournament list?

The Zombie Axiom

The Walking Dead is just weeks away! So it is time to start gearing up for all things zombie!  To do so I wanted to take a moment to present again The Zombie Axiom by my good friend David Monette. You can find his Kickstarter HERE.  David is a writer and illustrator who has had his work published all over the place like on Magic cards and magazine covers.

David has written his own zombie horror novel, set in upstate NY. This one however takes a unique spin by doing away with the usual super virus that illogically allows dead tissue to live again. That never did make sense!  Dave adds a bit of Science Fiction and a bit of Fantasy to the genre and makes it all work in an interesting and believable way. His book is easily one of the best zombie books I have read!

The mayhem starts off in Montreal, Quebec and works it's way down to New York where a band of survivors do their best to hold out against the horde.

David's kickstarter ends in just a few days. He is attempting to self publish the novel. In the kickstarter he has a tier where you can get a PDF, Ebook and paper back version of the book, but also some great rewards such as a tier where you can send Dave a picture of yourself, and he will do a drawing of you as a zombie!  Who doesn't want to see themselves as a zombie?? He also has tiers where you can get original oil paintings and other great works of his.

So don't miss out on your chance to get this great book, and a chance to help a good dude get a leg up.

Again, HERE is his Kickstarter. Take a look and get in on this project!

I don't get there often any more, but last night I made it to Battle for Salvation and played some X-Wing with Fritz and a couple new members!

I love this game. It is great in it's simple and fast play, plus complete lack of any effort to prepare. Just buy your ships and throw down!

I made this galaxy gaming table and it was a big improvement from the last game I played on a felt mat. Here is a bunch more pics.

The game itself went down to the wire.  I used Vader in his Tie Advanced, another pilot in a Tie Interceptor, plus a lowly academy pilot in a basic tie.  Fritz used a Lamda shuttle with a mercenary co pilot and a Fire Spray (Slave 1) with some other dude.

Our opponents had Biggs Darklighter and Luke Skywalker, plus an A wing and a Hawk 290 or some such.  We set up a bunch of asteroids and away we went!

Here is a video of the game:

The hero of the game was my Academy Pilot.  He was unfortunately the first of our ships to fall in range of the rebel scum, but blindly swerving from side to side saved his hide. He evaded almost all of the shots and flew right threw the scrum, taking down Biggs on his way. He wheeled around and came in behind, absorbing more shots and helping to take down Luke Skywalker.  Vader layed down the law by blasting the crap out of the Hawk, softening it up for the kill, then taking down the A wing.

Luke is a tricky fellow using R2 to regenerate his shields, and Biggs managed to save his A wing buddy for two rounds by absorbing shots from us that would otherwise have gone at the A wing to wipe out the weaker ship.

My interceptor didn't quite do much, he took some shots then ran into an asteroid and died.  But that is ok because that Academy Pilot earned a promotion!

Fritz's lamda shuttle was a fail. He was unsure how to play it and it just sorta sat in the way the whole time, limiting the maneuverability of my ships.  And while it has a gun on the back, it does not seem to be able to shoot backwards!

At the end is was poor Luke vs both of Fritz's big ships, Vader and my Academy Pilot.  We had him boxed in with no where to go!  Die rebel scum.

This was a learning game for me, so we probably didn't do every thing right. But who cares, it was a LOT of fun.

Enjoy the vid!

Hey guys tonight I will be broadcasting live. SEE THE SHOW HERE.

Tonight I will be continuing the conversation started last week comparing Melta Guns to Grav Guns. But also, I have a special guest!

My good friend Matt Loter of Prettiest Princess Games has launched a Kickstarter to raise funds to publish his own table top board games of sorts called Glamazons: The Curse of the Chainmail Bikini. Visit THE KICKSTARTER HERE.

Here is some of the original artwork:

The premise of the game is a social bluffing game where you try to outwit your friends to get your Glamazon outfitted in the best armor possible, rather than the traditional skimpy G strap chainmail bikini.  Matt can explain it much better than I! But it sounds like lots of fun.

So tune in tonight to see the show at 7pm EST, and check out Matt's Kickstarter!

Gearing up for The Warstore Weekend!

I will be playing my Tau at Mechanicon at The Warstore Weekend!

I love that Mechanicon has hooked up with Neal and The Warstore. Mechanicon is my favorite GT and Neal is my favorite vendor of crack!  I attended last year and the event was a lot of fun despite the gloomy impending hurricane that would go on to knock out the Jersey coast and power for weeks in the Northeast...

The Mechanicon itself is one of the best GTs in the country because puts the focus on fun and the hobby rather than beating face. Sure face gets beaten, but at least it is going to be by a beautiful army created by a dude who loves the hobby part as much as the gaming!  Mechanicon routinely gathers up the nicest armies I have seen at any GT and the folks, including Tony Spino who runs it all are the nicest I have met.

But The Warstore Weekend is more than just Mechanicon. The Colonial GT is now also part of the weekend!  TCGT is running a Warhammer Fantasy GT and it looks to be a step in the right direction for growing the con.  Neal has it down. Come up with a good idea, and surround yourself with good people to make it happen. The Mechanicon and Colonial folks are just that.

I know from experience that the Warmachine events are huge as well.

That, coupled with the gaming demos and other fun makes The Warstore Weekend a must do for guys in the Northeast! Plus it is at a super convenient location. East Brunswick NJ is just over the bridges and convenient to any one from Maine to Virginia!

Hope to see you guys there!

I know this has even less to do with 40k than most of my posts lately, but I wanted to share this with you.

My wife fancies herself a writer and gets published in some pretty big sites!

We went to see author David Sedaris this week and she wrote a review that was instantly published by Women Around Town. If you are a reader you probably know him, if not, he is a witty and dry humored author who writes about life and things in general.  I recommend him if you would like a good high level laugh!

Take a look at Deb's article HERE. It is a pretty decent read.

More 40k soon! I am prepping my Tau still for Mechanicon coming up in a couple weeks.  Well actually a week or so.  I will shoot some pics this week and post up a list and strategies.

Battle reports to follow!

Mechanicon 2013

It has been a while since I went to Mechanicon but I just have not had time to post!

Another fine event has come and gone.  I go to Mechanicon every year mostly for the people that go. I really enjoy seeing these guys each year, and catching up and discussing armies and you name it. I love my yearly game with Ted Nagel, video to come soon and overall I love the vibe of the event.

Here are some pros and sadly cons.

Pros first.

All of the above is true. It is a feel good event.  Tony Spino and crew run a top show. Every thing ran on time and when it came to the awards ceremony, they had it wrapped up quick and had us out the door!  (Lets face it, after 2 days of gaming, some of us just want to hit the road instead of sitting through a three hour awards.)

The best thing going for Mechanicon was joining forces with The Warstore Weekend.  Neal and Steve at The Warstore have taken over all of the logistics, leaving the guys at Mechanicon the ability to focus on what they love... running an event.  What is the best side effect of this? The ticket price!  Mechanicon used to be one of the most expensive events in the country, topping 125 bucks or so.  They were one of the first independent GTs to run in the country and that price was a product of the venue they chose.  It was expensive!  This had a great side effect that I will touch on later.

But now with The Warstore combining a whole weekend of gaming into one event, the ticket price is down to a low 50 bucks.  You cant beat that!

The tables:

Without a doubt the best gaming tables I have played on. Each table is hand crafted with a wooden rail to stop dice from falling, plus an additional two feet of space at the end of the table for armies. As more and more people bring elaborate display boards, this is becoming a necessity that other GTs are ignoring, leaving us searching for places to place our armies. (Usually the floor)

The Terrain:

I have yet to go to a GT and not hear some one complain about the terrain.  Mechanicon is not exempt from this.  I admit, sometimes, on some of the tables, the terrain was a little sparse. But in general, I think the terrain is outstanding!  It is all superbly painted and a lot of it is hand crafted. There are the usual bits of broken Star Wars ships made into terrain that Mechanicon is famous for, mixed in with the standard GW pieces, plus some had crafted ones like bridges and buildings.  There is the LOS blocking piece in the middle.  The best part is that each terrain piece has a write up in the rules packet that explains how it is to be used. This stops people from gaming the terrain.  One of the best parts is that they include gun emplacements. If you are lucky, you can scramble to an Aegis wall that has an anti air gun inside and use it! This adds an element of fun to the games.

The rules:

I love Mechanicon missions.  First, and perhaps most importantly, they are NOT designed for hyper competitive 40k.  Mechanicon has always been the GT for those who like the hobby. If you are a flavor of the monther, win at all cost player, you may not much like some of the missions at Mechanicon.  I think this is great!  It changes things up and sometimes helps tip the balance of power away from those ridiculous abusive lists.

Now time for the Cons.

The cost:

Yeah, I listed the low 50 dollar price under the cons. BUT, I would happily pay 100 bucks like it used to be if that would help dissuade some of the flavor of the monthers from showing up.

What does this mean?  I use "Flavor of the Monther" as a descriptor for those guys who have made a living out of always playing the hardest net list they can and only going to tournaments to wreck face. Their army seems to change monthly to reflect the most abusive and broken combinations in the game and often times these armies they play are painted poorly at best, and the guys themselves are not the most fun opponents in general.  It is not rare to find that these armies are not even painted by the guy playing them. (Usually those look a bit nicer as they are commissioned.)

How does this impact Mechanicon? Well when it was 125 bucks to play, that was a major investment and hurdle. This usually attracted mostly more mature veterans who are not afraid of sinking time and money into their hobby. Most of the armies that you saw on the tables were armies crafted with care and love. Every game was eye candy and every opponent was  a pleasure. Mechanicon didn't really attract the power gamers.  And when they did show up, they probably didn't return because they didn't like how the missions and rules may have tipped the balance away from their carefully constructed list of doom.

Well at 50 bucks, it is a lot less of a monetary investment. So we have started seeing more of the abusive lists showing up along with their players. The first effect of this is that it chases away the player base that Mechanicon became known for. Who wants to go to a GT with their fluffy beautiful army just to get stomped by 5 riptide or Eldar/Dark Eldar lists over and over?  Also, I have seen a steady decline in the visual quality of the armies that people are bringing.  One of my opponents playing Eldar/Dark Eldar who tabled me was playing models that were half painted. Yes, the portions that were done were VERY well done, but the army needed a LOT more work. Something you don't expect to see at Mechanicon. More on that particular army and game in a bit.

But Jawa, you played Tau!  You are being a hypocrite! Well, perhaps. But, I invested over 120 hours into painting my army over the course of six months. It was one of the nicest painted armies in the room, and every one that saw it agreed that it was a balanced and fair Tau list.  But yes, I still hate myself for playing it...

So sadly, a tournament that has traditionally been a place where the best of the best looking armies could show up and have fun games is being replaced by the standard net list 3 color minimum GTs of abuse. I regret to say that I have played two of my most unpleasant games in a long time this year.

By the way, some of these guys I count amongst my best 40k friends. But there is a time and place for this sort of thing, and Mechanicon has traditionally not been that place while Nova has set up a format that embraces it (The invitational) for example.

The Hotel:

Overall I would say that the hotel was not a great value. It was a Hilton but the weekend rate was 120 bucks a night and the quality was not there. The sports bar was just awful. The first day when it was time for lunch they for some reason had just one staff member working there.  They had to know that the place was going to be packed!  Some food and bev manager dropped the ball. A lot of guys left in frustration after sitting there for half an hour and not even getting greeted.  The hotel did not make alcholic drinks available at all really. They had another little bar that should have been open but it was unstocked and unused. Not all that big an issue, but then the hotel staff was complaining about us drinking outside beverages!  How can they not provide a place for us to get beverages, then complain that we were drinking our own...

The location of the place was not great either. Northern Jersey sucks. It is trafficy and congested. There was no eatery in walking distance to the hotel, and driving out meant paying for parking and possibly driving DUI.  We did manage to find a nice brew pub and had an enjoyable dinner, but in general, the Hotel deserves a low grade.  Plus the rooms were too hot.  It was 65-70 degrees outside but the rooms did not have working AC.  I guess they turn them off.  My room was hot, and the AC only spit out warm air.

But worry not, they are already looking for a new venue for next year.

My overall experience and batrep?

I got to play Ted Nagel and his Son again. Two of my favorite opponents. I look forward to seeing them each year.  But my gaming experience in general was not great.  And this makes me sad.

My first opponent of the GT was a Tau guy using 5 riptides and 4 Skyrays. He had Oshava, a squad of 6 fire warriors, a single suit as a tropos, another squad of suits, a named riptide, a suit buff commander.  I don't even know if the list was legal, not that it really mattered. I didn't much care and was not about to make it an issue at the GT. As I understand it, if you take that named riptide from the Farsight enclave, he becomes the Oshava bodyguard... you can't take another body guard... I don't know if he did, but his army only had three troops.  The 6 fire warriors, a single suit, and a squad of 3 suits.  So if the 6 FW were one of his compulsory choices from his mother list, how were both of the other suit units counting as troops? Farsight made the one from the Enclave count as troops I think, but what about the single troop suit?  The named riptide and the other riptide taken from the Farsight Enclave both had the Earthcaste reroll of Nova charge upgrade... not sure if that is legal either.

Needless to say the game did not go well for me. My army was outclassed.  With most of his riptides rerolling every thing and ignoring cover and armor and instant killing, and then hiding behind terrain, jumping out and blasting me then hiding again, he wiped me out in two turns. That is ok, but in the process of doing so he was arguing with me about what had Line of Sight and doing questionable things with the missile racks on his tanks.  As I understand hull mounted missiles, they can only fire in the direction that they are pointing.  So a Hunter Seeker missile mounted on the front of the tank pointing straight ahead is dependent upon the position of the tank to fire.  You cannot fire it at something behind the tank for example unless it is mounted on a turret or guided by a marker light. But in order to avoid granting me a cover save with three of the missiles of his rack he turned the turret sideways so that the ones on the right of the rack were not shooting through terrain then claimed that all six could now hit my unit and not grant cover.  Then he would say something like "What is this douchy? If I am being a douche tell me..." I suppose I should have taken it up with him then and perhaps attempted a discussion about how missiles actually work, but just didn't feel like being in that situation and let it go. At this point I just clustered my units so he could kill as much of them as possible as fast as possible so the game would end.

The sad part here is that he was a nice guy. Part of the problem is he was a new player. And a lot of new players get sucked into the habit of arguing minute rules issues that veteran players just either understand, or don't care about. Like calling a judge over to decide if some of the missiles on my Skyray had LOS through ruins on his tank.  There was no need to call a judge. All he had to do was get behind my missiles and look which he didn't do, instead he looked from behind his tanks to see if he could see my missiles. It doesn't work that way. Yes they could each see a part of his tank so yes they could fire, granting a cover save. But the issue went on for much longer than it should have in a game where we were both pretty certain (at least I was) that was going to end in a complete tabling.

His army?  Well there were signs of nice touches. He had little crystal gems magnetized to the backs of all his rockets to signify which have fired, and he had them attached to the bases of his Riptides to indicate how many wounds they had left.  Nice touch. But the army itself was not of the quality you are used to seeing at Mechanicon.

In my second game I got Chucky Nagel and his pretty Chaos army.  Here is a case of a bad matchup for him. He of course had to charge me, and unfortunately for him my army is super abusive to marines within 30 inches.  But we both accepted that and had a fun time playing the game.  While it was wholly unfair to Chucky who would go on to win Smoking Boots, we sill enjoyed the game and crafted a story together. One heavily weighted to the glorious Tau.

Game three found me against a Chaos/Demons list with Fateweaver and other Flying Monstrous Demons and stuff. The army was pretty and the player was fun.  He was chill and engaging. We had a fun game that came down to the wire. While he got the win, it was only because a single shot and subsequent failed leadership test made 4 kill points die giving him a lead I could not overcome. It was exciting and entertaining.  I walked away from game three feeling satisfied and happy. We crafted a great story together!

Unfortunately though, scoring big points in game two and decent in game three matched me up against the Eldar/Dark Eldar list for game 4.  He was a young and friendly kid. But his models were unfinished. He had a couple wraith knights, a huge seer council with the baron attached, a couple Venoms with troops inside.  Not sure what else.  There were glimmers of outstanding painting on his models, each had a beautiful flame effect.  But the army just needed more time.

The game itself went badly for me.  First he was another newer player. But had a "i dont care I will just punch them in the face" attitude that doesn't bode well for playing in a GT.

First here is something I am curious about.  I had first turn and was trying to drop my Riptide bombs on his council which he had tightly packed behind terrain.  I started laying my template over his models and he insisted that I had to lay it over their base. They were on small flying stands.  Which means that the model which is easily three times the size of the stand does not matter. (I needed to touch the bases with my template, ignoring the mode.) First, I was under the impression that bikes now come with the large base flying base not the small one.  Other players I have seen using them in tournaments had them on large flying bases, plus I recently just got one that came with a large base. (I could be wrong on that, but I thought it did.)  So I said to him, "I'm not going to bust your balls on bases but they are supposed to be on the appropriate sized base and I think bikes now come with large. Some guys won't let you play those." His answer was "well I would just punch them in the face." Alrighty... Another case where I think the higher price point would have weeded out an opponent. The chief advantage of using small bases is that you can hide more of them behind terrain if they are on smalls.

In this instance we used the hulls of the bikes. (I only got four of them and he made 3 invul saves so it didnt matter at all) So it was a non problem. It was the response that mattered.  Apparently I was flat wrong. Bikes DO now come with small bases.  Or do they? Can any one comment to this?

Any way, once his squad started casting spells and moving they became nigh unkillable. It took my entire army two rounds of shooting to kill two of them. It instantly became obvious that the game was over. I broke it down for him how the next few rounds would go (him hit and running in and out of combat and wiping me out to a man without losing more than one or two models.) and conceded the objectives and game.  Seeing as how he was not really engaging in conversation, or really taking part in the game at all other than to measure his distances and roll dice leaving me with a rather dull and unfun experience, it really was the best choice.

Game Five:

Here is a big regret for me.  I was matched up against a Khorne Berzerker list with Kharne in a Land Raider and berzerkers in rhinos, a vindicator, a winged demon prince, bastion...

He obviously loved his army and I feel for him. It was very much like my old Blood Angels army that is absolutely unplayable in 6th ed.  When we started the game, I warned him my army was absolutely devastating to marines within 30" but mostly harmless outside of that range.   We had three objectives each, each of them counting for a secret total of points. You could hold three objective and I could hold one, but I could win because mine is worth more than your three.  The deployment was the long corner to corner no mans land.  I placed all three of my objectives near the same terrain piece, making it obvious where I planned on deploying.  I then won the roll to go first, but gave it to him which he was thankful for.  He would at least get a chance to close the distance before I started shooting...

But unfortunately that would be the last thing that went his way.  He clustered his troops directly across from the terrain piece where I placed all the objectives which was in the rightish corner of my deployment zone.  So what do I do? Some Tau trickery of course. Knowing that he was so close to my "bunker" he would just lob Vindicator shells at me then assault me.  SO I deployed all of my stuff in the far opposite corner of my zone where was only the smallest of walls to take cover behind.  My plan? Ambush. Rush his side from my left flank, and take his objectives knowing that he would come for me regardless. Only now he had to cover a lot of space in open terrain. I placed pathfinders in opportune locations to grant me marker lights but keep them out out trouble., I put my Skyray so that it would assuredly get side shots if he lined up his vindicator to pummel me, and I put my Stealth team infiltrated into the center behind LOS blocking terrain, ready to jump out and fusion gun the Land Raider.

And then dice started rolling. First he moved his rhinos up 12" and popped smoke.  But sadly, his vindicator shot would scatter back onto his own rhino, and explode it.  Then on my turn, the dying started.  I of course lined up the zerkers standing in the crater with a template that ignored cover and scored a hit, killing them all.  My sky ray hit the vindicator with a full barrage of six missiles to it's side armor, exploding it.  My broadsides wiped out his heavy weapon marines on the bastion and instantly things started looking bleak.  Then I displaced and moved back, leaving only small squads to suffer the charge if it came...

Next turn he could not reach with the land raider with a reliable charge so he stayed inside. Unfortunately it was in range of my stealth team.  He killed some of my troops with the guns on his Bastion and held his prince back a turn to keep me from advancing into his backside.  But then my stealth team jumped out and exploded the Land Raider. I hit it with enough markers to increase their BS to 10 to ensure I hit, and it did not even have a cover save any more.  The explosion killed my fusion gunner, but left Kharne and all his boys to the mercy of my entire army... they would not survive.

My kroot came on and popped another rhino from behind. The squad in there would go on to kill the kroot and some pathfinders before dying to lots of missiles while my missile sides took down his Demon Prince after the prince killed a riptide (The charge was actually short but I called it close enough which my opponent happily accepted) and the game ended that was never in doubt with a full victory for me.

And I felt terrible.  He knew it was coming. But his disappointment was obvious in his face. Then I heard words that I never want to hear again. My opponent said that was one of the most UNFUN games he had ever played.

Hearing an Echo here?

That is how bad Tau suck.  Whether or not you are playing them, playing against them sucks. Even though my army was fair and balanced, even he agreed, it still rendered an army that he cared deeply about down to an noncompetitive joke and he hated it, and I feel for him. I hated it too.

To be fair, he did do what I warned him not to. He could have actually stayed back and held his objectives, forcing me to advance, and probably stood a chance of winning, but why would Khorne do that?  Against my army he had a chance. So long as he didn't charge. That was not the game he wanted to play, and up until I made my Tau army, neither did I.  We adapt or we die.  I think all of us understand this to some point.

But that didn't stop the sound from resonating in my ears.

It made me realize that for that game at least, I was a hypocrite. Sure it was circumstantial and every army has bad matchups, this one was his, but I was playing an army that left him with a negative opinion. And THAT is what matters to me now after playing 40k for seven years.  He admitted that it was not my fault. I was not bad to play against, but the army was just no fun to play against.  That didn't make me feel any better.  I won't be playing them at another GT. Instead I will be playing my Lamenters and have vowed to finish them.

So any way, to sum up all of this rambling and to try to climb off my high horse. (Tongue in cheek humor guys) Mechanicon is different from The Nova (among others).  It has traditionally been the tournament where those hobby lovers with their lovingly crafted but wholly noncompetitive armies could go and play and maybe stand a chance of not getting tabled in all of their games. While there was always a smattering of them, the cut throat players tended to avoid it because they did not like the rules or the price.  But with the price now a nonfactor, more of those cutthroat players with subpar armies are showing up.  For the first time at Mechanicon I saw a lot of barely painted but terribly abusive armies.

I made an example of two players and I want to be fair to them.  Neither of them were bad guys and both of them were newer players.  I like them both as people but would not willingly play either again.  I don't think that either of them understood the spirit of Mechanicon as I see it as well as most of the guys who have been there from the beginning including the organizers.  And to make an example of myself, I don't think that my last opponent would ever play against me again.

So am I any better?  Are we products of the armies we play?

What do our armies say about us?

In most tournaments it is irrelevant, we are there to beat face. But in a rare few like Mechanicon and DaBoyz, there are different expectations. At least for some of us.

Jawaballs

Here are some images from Mechanicon including a few armies in display. I wish I got more, I thought I did, but most guys didn't even have them on display at all. The Nurgle Chaos army won a very much deserving Best Appearance. It was majestic.  It was no coincidence that the painter waited until Mechanicon to unveil it.  Well done!

Lamenters Rhino WIP

Here are a bunch of WIP shots of my Lamenters Rhino checkering.

Lamenters Rhino Doors
I am painting the doors separate from the Rhino. First I sprayed them grey. One is kind of mangled because it was previously glued to the model, but I pried it off. I will add battle damage to cover up the mess to the chasis and the door.

Using a metal ruler I measured out a grid on the door. The door is exactly 2.5 CM wide and 3 CM long.  Just in case you are trying to figure out measurements of 40k models, remember they were designed by Englishmen!  Think metric.

It is important that you use a good ruler.  This one is small, only 15 CM long, and thin. This helps it fit into the tight spots on the model. But also, the measurements start exactly at the edge. Most rulers have a little extra space before the measurements start. This makes it more difficult to get accuracy.
I got this ruler off Amazon. It was one of two that came for like 3 dollars.

Here I am marking off the spots to draw the lines.

Here I have begun carefully painting.  I first painted every other square with codex grey. Then I traced a dime in the center for the circle. No need to paint all the squares.  I went over the squares with black, and fortress grey.  I used my trusty Reaper Kolinsky 10-0 Sable brush for this.

Next step was to use Ulthuwan Grey over the fortress. I painted the circle with it as well. I then freehand painted the heart, and freehanded the black outline.  I took this time to touch up the black squares too.

Here I am measuring the top hatch.  It was 2.5 x 5 CM.  My measurements were a tad off and one of my squares ended up the wrong size but I fixed it when I painted.  I used a bottled water cap for the circle.

Then I followed the same process. Black squares, and  fortress, codex, Ulthuwan and White on the white squares.

Lamenters Rhino

And the same process on the circle. Freehanding the heart.

Lamenters Logo

I am still undecided on the list. I know generally there is going to be a bike squad, a few assault squads, a storm raven, some scouts, and death company, a rhino and tac squad... but I still dont know if I am going to use Blood Angels or Space Marines. I get more models on the table as SM.  But honestly it wont matter either way, I am going to blasted into oblivion no matter what...

:)  I need to get cracking.  I am playing this army at Templecon on February 6. I have a little over two months...

And yes I have a display board planned out.  Should be awesome!
